How about a society based on H.C. Andersen's short tale "The Emperor's New Clothes"? The citizens are kept prisoners not by police brutality, but by financial means. The freedom of speech would be guaranteed by all kinds of "Charter of Rights" and Freedom Acts and Human Ridiculous Rights but in fact what you see will be a well organized system that will spread its propaganda deep in the large society's social layers. What about when the common citizen would be so abused, harassed, discriminated and discouraged for decades and would not have any choice but to be obedient and follow the official free democratic propaganda? What about when common people under the influence of fictional life would not be able to clearly separate reality from deception? Everything would just be an enormous machine which is fuelled by our deceptions and ignorance.
We will not speak up like people all over the world because we will jeopardize our financial, materialistic way of well-being and will self destroy our magical machine. This way we all will advance more and more toward our disaster. Our life is tied, is integrated in this self deception system. We are so bonded and that only somebody from the outside world could give us a hope to overcome this free burden of "democratic" society. What would you do when all the ties with the outside world are conditioned by your financial and social status? All the State propaganda to the outside world is so incredibly manipulated; all the reports are prepared by highly qualified staff. Unemployment rate, education, health care, environment and so on are just falsely reported with the goal to show a democratic society and bring more naive newcomers (migrants, refugees). As long the government is able to keep this artificial welfare and distribute to the majority, nobody will start asking where the money came from. We are in a comfort zone and we are under the government umbrella. But when the unsustainable way of life, Hollywood kind will not be available, the government will face massive unrest and protests similar with what we see today in so called "arab spring". Then we will have the real side of the story and get ready to unfold it.
