First-time mothers face an increased risk for mental disorders such as schizophrenia, depression and bipolar disorder in the first three months after childbirth, a new study suggests.

"I felt like there was no hope for me," Helen Vasa, a postpartum depression patient, told CTV News.
"I remember begging my mother to help me, telling her I can't cope, I don't know what to do, I don't know how to function."
The study, which will be published in the Dec. 6 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, also found that new fathers do not have an increased risk for postpartum mental disorders.
The Danish researchers conducted a study to estimate the risk of postpartum mental disorders requiring hospital admission or outpatient contact for first-time parents up to one year after childbirth.
